Why can I RECEIVE email, but not SEND it?

Answer

If you have set up your email in an application like Microsoft Entourage, Outlook Express, Thunderbird or MacMail and you are receiving email, but cannot send it, the problem may be that your ISP is blocking 3rd party outgoing mail servers.

The best way to be sure if Uncle Jake Media's email servers are working properly is to login to your webmail. If you can send and receive from there, your problem is probably local and related to your ISP.

We've seen this with Bell South and Earthlink, just to name a couple.  The best solution for this is to use your ISP's default outgoing server.  If you have an email account with them already set up in your application, you can simply go into the preferences for that and copy the OUTGOING MAIL SERVER or SMTP.  Typically, these require authentication to set up, so be sure you have the username and password for the account handy.

If you have lost the mail settings for your ISP, you may find it on the following list: Common SMTP Servers.

If you have a Google gmail account, here's a handy article that explains how to use Google's SMTP.  We've found this to be very handy in hotels and coffee shops that generally block common SMTPs.

I have worked with Don Freeman and Uncle Jake Media to design my photography website over this past year. Don is a real pleasure to work with and he and the staff have been very creative and innovative in their suggestions and approaches. I recommend them highly!
